Research Overview

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a cell-permeable tetrapeptide that selectively targets the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid critical for electron transport chain function. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 improves mitochondrial bioenergetics, reduces reactive oxygen species production, and prevents mitochondrial-driven apoptosis. Originally developed by Stealth BioTherapeutics for Barth syndrome and primary mitochondrial myopathy, SS-31 has attracted significant interest in the longevity research community for its potential to reverse age-related mitochondrial dysfunction.
